ASEP Internet
Presence: What is it?
Tommy Boone, PhD, MPH, FASEP
Professor and Chair
Director, Exercise Physiology
Laboratories
College of St. Scholastica
Duluth, MN
THE PRIMARY QUESTION in
this article is, “To what extent does ASEP have a recognized presence on
the Internet?” A secondary question of importance is, "To what extent
are the ASEP electronic journals recognized on the Internet?" Both
questions will be answered in this article. The overview of the Internet
sites are not in any particular order. Collectively, they should
enable the reader to draw some conclusion about the ASEP's web presence.
Neilsen
Library Research Guide has ASEP and JEPonline
posted among other electronic web sites. At the George Washington
Unviersity, the Himmelfarb
Health Science Libraries, there is the listing ASEP. The College
of St. Catherine Library via their Guide
to Resources in Exercise and Sports Science list JEPonline.
Similarly, look under the Physiologie
section of Universite de Montreal. Cardiff University, through its
Information
Services, has made links to both of ASEP's electronic journals.
The University of Leon's Department of Physiology lists ASEP along with
other Societies and Organizations.
Impressive. Perhaps even more impressive is that NewJour, an
archive of Internet listing of electronic journals and newsletters, listed
ASEP's electronic journals almost from the beginning of their conception
and web presence. Consider, for example,
JEPonlineand
PEPonline.
There is also a listing for the ASEPNewsletter.
With University of Texas at Arlington Libraries Online, they present
Internet Resources page entitled Exercise
and Sport Studies with the listing of ASEP. The OhioUniversity
Libraries has listed ASEP on its Physical
Activity and Sports Resources page.
The De Montfort University
Physical Education Department lists in its Graduate
Information ASEP's Exercise Physiology Related Web Links. Also,
the Midwestern State Unviersity, the instructor listed with
her important Web
Sources. The author states that the American Society of Exercise
Physiologists is an organization with the intent on unifying, promoting,
standardizing, and certifying exercise physiologists. The author also states
that this is probably a good idea as the only state currently with certification
and licensure requirements defining who can be called an exercise physiologist
is Louisiana. The University Career Services at Northwestern University
has linked with ASEP under Professional
Associations and Societies. The University of Dayton, Department
of Health and Sport Science has a comprehensive Lists
of Interest, including ASEP. Dr. Gordon Robertson of the
University of Ottawa includes ASEP in yet another comprehensive listing
of Websites and
Links.
Similarly, among many electronic
Internet journals listed by Scholarly Sport Sites, Serials,
ASEP’s presence is strong with the listing of its two journals. Note
that listed are online, fulltext periodicals with editorial boards. Unless
otherwise specified, there are no subscription charges to access these
periodical articles. Note also that under “Associations”
you will ASEP listed as one of many organizations that has something to
do with exercise/fitness. Have you notice what is missing in the
list? The Australian Sports Commission states that there are
several good sites for "exercise physiology" topic on the Internet. Listed
are a few of the best Topics
in Sports. Note also that ASEP's electronic journal, PEPonline
is listed, too. What about the Italian Society of Sport Science,
well, refer to their SportScienceLink
page under favorite links. Workout.com has listed ASEP among
its Fitness Organizations.
Note the listing of ASEP
with the Health Care Information Resources in the Health
Care Disciplines and Education sector of their homepage. They make
information about health and disease accessible in the belief that the
informed consumer is a more satisfied consumer of healthcare. Also,
under MedMarket.com, you find the listing of ASEP listed with the
other Medical Resources
as “…a national non-profit professional organization committed exclusively
to the advancement and improvement of exercise physiology." How about
the MedWebPlus web site, and ASEP
and Societies?
About.com
and KLS.com has ASEP listed with several popular fitness Organizations
and Organizations
on the Web, respectively. Also, take a look at their listing
of important journals.
Listed in Sportscience Net Links is ASEP with other professional
organizations
and associations. What about LIN? ASEP
listed once again! And, OPG
as well.
VacuMed has been serving
customers around the world in exercise physiology and cardiopulmonary science
since 1968. Take a look at how they present their Links
page. Interesting! Similarly, the use of the ASEP name is used in
educational departments (such as Exercise
Physiology Web Resources). Insite Fitness identifies ASEP
among its Exercise
Physiology Links. Both ASEP
and JEPonline
are listed with Z Fitness Pro - Library. The Illinois State
Academy of Science (ISAS) was founded on December 7, 1907, and is affiliated
with the Illinois State Museum in Springfield. ISAS was the successor to
two 19th century state societies devoted to natural history studies.
The Illinois State Academy of Science World Wide Web site was originally
created on January 3, 1996, hosted by the Illinois State Museum. Guess
what? Listed along with the Physiology
Societies and Associations is ASEP!
If you look in different
search engines, ASEP is everywhere! Under Yahoo, it comes up "first"
in the search for Exercise Physiology. With WebCrawler (Health
and Exercise), it is listed in the Organizations
section. Similarly, Magellan Internet Search uses the same
listings.
ASEP has always been at
the very top of the list of exercise physiology organizations
in the Yahoo search engine. Similarly, Excite Health
by WebMD, there is a listing ASEP
with other organizations. The AeroSport company list ASEP
in their Resources/Links
page. Similarly, Ideal Products list ASEP on their Professional
Organizations page. Check out Lycos and Google
and ASEP.
Professors at several colleges
also list ASEP with other organizations in their web sites. Take,
for example, Dr. Steve Glass of Wright State College has a big web
site and, yes, listed in the section for Organizations
is ASEP. Chris Gillen of Kenyon College, has linked the course
syllabus with ASEP
and other organizations in a Biology of Exercise course. Very impressive
course! Well, then, what about the following syllabus? Exercise
Physiology Web Resources of the Biology Department of the College
of the Holly Cross. Also, look at the Highly
Recommended Sites at Gordon, and what about the Exercise
Physiology Links from Dr. Elder's web site Kinesiology 2310
- Physiology of Exercise? What about the University of Mississippi's
contact
page and the Journals
and Publishing web page? Dr. Lynn B. Patton's of East Tennessee State
University has a web site that also includes a section for Professional
Resources that list ASEP. Dr. Darryn Willoughby has listed
ASEP on his Resume.
How about our President's page, Dr. Robert Robergs and his Professonal
Philosophy?
The University of San Francisco
via the Exercise and Sport Science Department has an excellent Links
web site. Similarly, take a look at the Florida Atlantic University
Links
of Interest site. How about the Electronic
Journals page located at Augus L. Macdonald Library at St. Francis
Xavier University? Again, the same occurs on the Exercise
Science, Sports Medicine, and Kinesiology web site. University
of Florida has a web page entitled Exercise
Physiologists. It is full of interesting information, including
the listing of ASEP. The College of Charleston, Department of
Physical Education and Health, has listed ASEP with its other Professional
Organizations. Matt Feigenbaum, PhD, of the Department of
Health & Exercise Science at Furman University, has listed ASEP
among other professional
organizations. Similarly, at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee,
The
School of Allied Health Professionals has a very interesting listing
of
Professional
Organizations and Certification Programs, including ASEP. The Division
of HPR at Wayne State University, has a good looking HPR
Links page. In fact, all of their pages are a "must see".
Obviously, the list of Internet
sites that bear either directly or indirectly on ASEP is in the thousands.
I hope that this very short list has been helpful. ASEP has a significant
Internet presence. Organizations, libraries, departments, search
engines, healthcare agencies, and so forth recognize that ASEP exists,
and is recognized as the professional organization of exercise physiologists
in the United Sates.
