Membership Categories

Individuals may apply for ASEP membership in one of the below categories. Each category is briefly described.

Professional Membership is for a person with an academic degree in exercise physiology or a related degree (such as exercise science, kinesiology, human performance, and so on).

Certified Professional Membership is open only to professional members who have passed the ASEP National Certification Exam.

Affiliate Membership is a non-exercise physiologist (such as an athletic trainer, physical therapist, nurse, physical educator, and so on) who is working in the health, fitness, physical and/or cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, or sports medicine.

International Membership is for an academically prepared exercise physiologist or an individual who is working professionally in an exercise physiology related profession in a country other than the United States.

Emeritus Membership is for an active member in good standing for at least 15 years who retired from regular employment. Emeritus members retain all privileges of membership except eligibility to hold office.

Honorary Membership is for an individual who is not an ASEP member, but otherwise has attained eminence through scientific and/or public-service contributions to the conceptual framework of exercise physiology.

Student Membership is reserved for students actively engaged in an academically approved exercise physiology (science) program of study in the United States and worldwide.

Sustaining Membership is aimed at encouraging affiliation by commercial organizations that market products used by the exercise physiology research community, or companies that otherwise engage in activities that fall within the Society's general interests. Each member is entitled to discounted advertising rates in selected ASEP publications and reduced exhibit booth rental fees at the National Meeting.

Membership Benefits

Annual Meeting. ASEP members get a savings on the registration fee. Members share in the lastest research and professional findings and meeting others with similar interests in exercise physiology. Member registration at the meeting includes access to the papers, invited lectures, poster sessions, symposia on topics of current interest, controversy sessions, and social sessions.

ASEP Job Announcements. Located on the right side of every ASEP page is a list of jobs for those who are interested in finding an exercise physiology job.

ASEPnewsletter. As an ASEP member, you receive an online monthly newsletter highlights a message from the President. The newsletter also provides alerts to recent news along with a "question and answer" section, and career announcements.

ASEP Web Site. Increasingly, members rely on the ASEP web pages to keep them up-to-date with exercise physiology professional information.

Brochures. ASEP produces several relevant, attractive brochures about the organization itself, board certification (EPC exam), and accreditation.

Journal of Exercise Physiologyonline. JEPonline is the first "free full text exercise physiology research journal." It is published entirely online.

Membership Directory. The ASEP Directory is available to all members of the organization. It is a very practical means of contacting fellow exercise physiologists nationwide.

Networking. ASEP offers every member the opportunity to interact with other professional exercise physiologists, to discuss healthcare issues, and other networking concerns and opportunities important to the membership.

Professionalization of Exercise Physiologyonline. PEPonline is also an online, free text publication. It is the first journal ever to publish "professionalism" and related articles on exercise physiology.
