President’s Report
August, 1999

I hope the summer has been all that you had hoped it could be.  The month of August has resulted in the completion of the agenda for the second annual conference, continued work on developing and promoting the conference, Tommy’s continued improvements to the website (note the existence of an ASEP clothing and items online store), and continued efforts to affiliate existing state exercise physiology associations.

1999 Annual Conference Agenda
The agenda for the conference is now complete and currently being mailed to all members and speakers.  As you will see, the conference days are very “full” of professional, research, and special presentations.  You will also be pleased to know that we have been successful in recruiting several exhibitors for the conference, covering topics/equipment/products for indirect calorimetry, body composition, electromyography, nutrition and health education.

I need to encourage all members and non-members who intend to register for the conference to do so as soon as possible so that by the end of September we can inform the hotel of the required seating and food catering needs.  If you plan to register, could you please inform me so that I can add you to our list of participants.

JEPonline
The journal is still receiving a constant flow if submissions, and with the abstracts for the national meeting, the October issue will be our largest issue to date.  Naturally, I have needed to start on the editing to the October issue already, and with the need to work on the national meeting there is a busy September ahead!  Nevertheless, you will be able to read all abstracts accepted for the meeting in the October issue, and if available, read the proposal for nationwide program accreditation which is to be presented at the conference.

Other Organizations
Material has been sent to the West Virginia Association of Exercise Physiologists (WVAEP) for their possible affiliation with ASEP as a state chapter.  To date, all feedback from WVAEP has been positive, and Tommy and I are currently editing their bill that will soon be submitted to their state legislators.

My request that ACSM respond to us by September 1 concerning their views on official support of ASEP (see my July report) has not resulted in a favorable response.  It seems that the administrative office of ACSM did not like our efforts to inform you and all people of our (ACSM and ASEP) interaction.  The result has been an avoidance of the issues I raised in my letter.  I am naturally disappointed at this response, and will call the key personnel of ACSM to clarify any confusion and/or their attitudes towards ASEP.  Once again, ASEP deserves to be supported by ACSM, and our presence and efforts should be applauded and not shunned by a Sports Medicine organization.

Accreditation
I expect to see a revised copy of the accreditation proposal very soon.  The proposal will be reviewed and edited by the ASEP Board of Directors.  If the timing is appropriate, as mentioned earlier, I will try to have this proposal included in the October issue of JEPonline.  Dale Wagner will be presenting this proposal at the 1999 annual meeting.

Committee Involvement
Tommy and I discussed strategies to revitalize committee functions.  I will be communicating with committee members during September so there is a clear understanding of what is required from each committee member.  In addition, committee chairs need to restructure their committee (add and delete members) so that all members contribute to the directives given to the committee.

Several individuals have requested that they would like to help ASEP.  I think at this time the best way to help is to align yourself with a committee, contact the committee chair, and assist the functions of the committee.  As I have mentioned in prior reports, ASEP grows by the successful functions of these committees, and encourage all members to think of how they can contribute to issues such as accreditation, certification, licensure, public education, research, ASEP state chapters, student chapters, etc.

That is it for August.  Enjoy the coming Fall and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the meeting here in Albuquerque in October.
